... to see what would happen. The result - nothing. Child Protective Services said the report was not submitted within 24 hours, so they couldn't do anything. We had another case that we reported just two weeks ago to Child Protective Services. Another five- year old was involved. The teacher noticed a bite mark on his cheek. She asked him what happened, and he responded "my dad bit me." The teacher asked him if his dad was mad when he bit him and he said he was very mad. We reported this to CPS, but were told they couldn't do anything because the skin was not broken. These instances really make me question the system we rely on to protect our children. The question is are we doing enough t ...
... is a means of securing the best possible home for a child” (Facts on File 894). Some might argue that the child would be lacking the father in a lesbian couple and a mother in a gay couple. Sure, little Joey might not have a male role-model around the house, but all the kids raised by single mothers seem to be okay. Children who lose a parent and are raised in single parent households are not harmed. Or are they? If they are, they are affected in just the same way as children raised by gay and lesbian couples —that is, couples who are lacking a male or female role model. Children raised with parents of the same sex develop positive tolerances. They tend to have more positiv ...
... was injured at the age of three by a severe dog bite causing vision and neurological problems. When he turned eighteen he was already homeless but soon received the first $7500 installment of the $75,000 settlement. This money quickly took him off the street but did not last long. He then turned to a large factoring company by the name of J.G. Wentworth. He sold his remaining future payments of $67,500 for the lump sum of $16,100. He is now homeless again and has nothing left to sustain him. Another client by the name of Raymond White was awarded a $198,000 settlement but cashed in his future payments for a lump sum total of $54,000. This money did not last long. He is left with o ...
... cycles, and conflict between owners. Through socialism a nations wealth can be distributed more equally. Socialism is therefore based on cooperation rather than competition. Socialist believe that by creating an economic plan, farmers, manufacturers, workers, and government officials can properly adjust the production of goods to meet the needs of the people. Some socialist believe that government should go so far as to pay for education and Medicare. It is disagreement among socialists that has made for a wide spectrum of ideas, possibly making it more difficult for socialism to exist. Socialism and Karl Marx are two words that belong together. Marx was the most influential socialist ...
... a phenomenon on society in general and on child rearing in particular. Children acquire their goals, values and norms based on the way that they view or identify with their parents as well as from the quality and amount of care, love and guidance given to them by their parents. Parents who work present a different image to their children than parents who do not work. In addition, wage earners, including parents, must (in most cases), be absent from the home during the day. When considering these modifications to the family dynamics, there is a considerable basis for the opinion that the increaced household income outweigh the negative effects experienced by offspring in families were bot ...
... in Tienanmen Square, unaware of the machination the government had devised to cruelly murder them. Government soldiers then proceeded to kill them in cold blood. The incident was a tragedy for the victims, obviously, but it was also devastation to their democratic purpose. The Chinese government’s blatant disregard for any human rights have caused other Chinese people to shy away from starting their opinion, because they are fearful of being killed in the same way. Right now, China is rising to become one of the largest and most populous countries; therefore it would behoove the U.S. to make an effort to instill some respect for human rights into their government. Undoubtably, U.S. doll ...
... sexual advances, comments or requests that make one feel uncomfortable. "Sexual contact or threat of sexual contact or coercion for the purpose of sexual contact which is not freely entered into a mutually agreeable to both parties." It is difficult to know what ones perception of sexual harassment is. An arm around the shoulder to one person may not make them uncomfortable but to another it could be harassment. For me a pat or a pinch on a woman's bottom is sexual harassment. I feel we need to make sure to let that person know that this is not acceptable. No doesn't mean "NO" anymore. You have to show your harasser by your body language as well. It could possibly be stronger ...
... the work of the great 17th century pioneers--Francis Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Leibnitz, Isaac Newton, and John Locke--who had developed fruitful methods of rational and empirical inquiry and had demonstrated the possibility of a world remade by the application of knowledge for human benefit. The philosophes believed that science could reveal nature as it truly is and show how it could be controlled and manipulated. This belief provided an incentive to extend scientific methods into every field of inquiry, thus laying the groundwork for the development of the modern social sciences. The enlightened understanding of human nature was one that emphasized the right to self-expression and hum ...
... trade was responsible for the settlement we call New France. After the first steps toward a permanent colony in the new world were made, the next steps came in leaps and bounds. The French government was sending everyone they could to settle in New France. Courieurs de Bois, began coming to the colony to trap furs and sell them back in France. France granted land to poor people that were willing to risk the great voyage. The colony flourished, and grew. It was the fur trade that was mostly responsible for this colony. However, some think that by this point the colony was large enough to illegalize fur trapping and still remain a profitable colony for France. However, there i ...
... to an even higher rate. Affirmative action, as it is instituted today, serves more to divide out society than to unite and equalize it. First implemented to protect the rights and opportunities of women and minorities, it has cascaded into policies that favoritize but do not necessarily achieve the fundamental goals behind affirmative action. Governor Jeb Bush of Tallahassee recently implemented a new initiative in the Florida Affirmative Action Plan. His new plan reflects the true spirit of affirmative action by eliminating ineffective practices and replacing them with more efficient manners of aiding minorities and women in our society. Affirmative action can be viewed as a way in ...
