... moved into suburbs, and found good jobs. They expected nothing else but for their children to go to college and follow in their footsteps. Adults had faith in the American government, and believed that any hard working, dedicated and honest man would succeed, and of course, they thought that their children would conform to their traditional values. Young adults were expected to look and act a certain way. Young men had to have their hair cut short, be clean shaven, and dress in suits or nice clothes all the time. Young women should always wear the right amount of makeup, have their hair done, and wear skirts or dresses even when they are at home.#1 The children of these flawless paren ...
... goal is not the conquest of Iraq. It is the liberation of Kuwait.” These statements each emphasize the unselfishness of the American people in their addition to the war effort. Both Wilson and Bush are highlighting the fact that the wars they are going to fight are not America’s wars, but that America is willing to help for the greater good of humankind. Wilson: “We shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest our hearts – for democracy, for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own (unreadable)… for the rights and liberties of small nations, for such a universal domination of right as shall bring peace and safety to all nations and make th ...
... loss of jobs and a decline in living standards. How could NAFTA have such a devastating impact on American workers? In 1993, the year before NAFTA was passed, the U.S. had a $1.7 billion trade surplus with Mexico. This means that Mexicans were buying more American goods than Americans were buying from Mexico. After NAFTA, however, the situation was reversed. American business fled to Mexico in search of lower wages and lax labor and environmental regulations. They produced goods in Mexico to sell in the U.S. Our trade surplus with Mexico became a $16.2 billion dollar trade deficit. Due to this trade deficit, the U.S. has lost over 250,000 jobs. When workers lose their jobs because a ...
... it seems United States citizens should be able to make a simple decision on whether or not to wear a safety belt, the ever intrusive federal government makes the decision for its citizens. The government further restricts our freedoms by enforcing jaywalking fines. If one does not walk in a crosswalk specified by the government a fine is issued. The government can trust its citizens to decide to work and pay belts, yet citizens cannot be trusted to decide where to cross the street. The simple freedom of choosing where to cross a particular street is dimished. The overbearing power of the government may best be viewed in the rights parents have been robbed of. ...
... main concern for frequent Internet users. A significant observation is the amount of men that will log on as women. Jodi Obrien put it best when she states, “Many men say that a common motivation for logging on as a female is because they are fascinated by the unusual amount of attention they receive from other men when they are perceived as women” (http://www.echonyc.com/~women/Issue17/art-obrien.html). The one major concern that comes to mind is “cyber-rape.” It is apparent what kind of effect this has on people when Amy Bruckman, a doctoral student in the MIT Media Laboratory, states, “Unwanted attention and sexual advances create an uncomfortable atmosphere for women in MUDs, just as t ...
... nation for a more money. High financial priorities? Survey says “yes” . The basis on which Hussein is in power is controversial. He was not elected to his position, he took it. There was a military coup in 1968 that led him and his Ba'ath party to power. He was not elected, as until last year, there had not been an election since the coup (Cooperman 49). This says that Hussein has been a tyrant from the start, and his need for power is incredible. He wants complete domination of the Middle East, if not the world. Iraq is now a country struggling to survive. It is in the midst of an embargo, and the people are suffering. Death rates are up, and the amount of food available is dec ...
... was that those who were accused, in most cases, were not even communists. He realized that after World War II, the whole nation was afraid that communists would overtake the country. McCarthy did not know much about communism, but he used it to scare people. He told them that if they were not careful, communists would take over the country. Soon after, a committee was formed called the House Committee on Un-American activities. The group’s job was to investigate people whom they suspected had communist ties. One of his most famous sayings was “If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it is a duck. The same holds true for communists.” (Hamilton 2) He ...
... real. The Colonial government did in subsequent years establish Hong Kong's Legislative Council and Executive council, and the Colonial government appointed prominent and respected local Chinese citizens to serve on these bodies. These councils although far from democratic did ensure that the Chinese citizenry would at least have representatives to express their pleasure or displeasure with the colonial administration. But these representatives lacked any real power and served only at the pleasure of the Colonial administration. The government of Hong Kong was administered and run by the English Foreign service officers that flocked to Hong Kong, the last vestige of English Empire. In Ho ...
... these personality traits in the 5th grade are most likely to smoke in the 12th grade. Targeting smoking in high school students is important since studies have shown that adolescents who smoke daily in the 12th grade are likely to become established smokers as adults. Results of the study, published in the March issue of Preventive Medicine, show a strong association between rebelliousness in males in the 5th grade and daily smoking in the 12th grade. For example, the most rebellious males were three times more likely to become smokers than the least rebellious males. Risk-taking most strongly correlated with smoking among females, the investigators found. To be sure, a youngster who is ...
