... to have respect for those who had died for Athens, but also to encourage them to want to fight for their country. As in paragraph two he says, "But what lay behind those outward deeds, what really made us great-our training, our frame of government, our natural bent-I shall expound, primarily in praise of these men, but also as a fitting thing to be said on this occasion and proper for this audience to hear, the outsiders in it as well as the citizens." The main point of this is he wanted Athenians not to be fearful of dying for their country because you would be recognized as a hero. As he says in paragraph 12, "For such reasons I would console but not pity these men's parents. Raised ...
... only people appointed to rule. Luther undermines the first wall, and further weakens the Church by striking the second. The pope’s duty is to interpret the Holy Scriptures. The people follow the pope because he has a sincere understanding of the Bible. However there is no proof that the pope has the greatest understanding of the Holy Scriptures. Martin Luther believes that there may be other common people who are just as capable of interpreting the Bible. Luther argues if a “humble person” is just as knowledgeable of the Bible he or she should be followed as well. The pope’s understanding of the Bible should be used in bettering the Christian well being, as stated in Luther’s attack ...
... fact that Marco left his family to give them support and to save his oldest son who is "sick in the chest," (pg. 535) makes the reader forget about his illegal stay and makes his status rise to the one of a hero. In this play, Marco's actions lead us to the discovery of a violent side which he uses to defend his honor in a number of occasions. For example, when he challenges Eddie to lift the chair at the end of the first act, we understand that he did it to save his brother's face and his family's honor. In addition, the killing of Eddie by Marco's own hands at the end of the play, is the final display of his character. Marco's character is definitely expressed more by his actions than ...
... is wanted?" said he (Bartleby) mildly. "The copies, the copies," said I hurriedly. "We are going to examine them. There" and I held towards him the fourth quadruplicate. "I would prefer not to," he said, and gently disappeared behind the screen. "Why do you refuse?" "I would prefer not to"(20). Bartleby's actions show that he is an outcast of society. His attitude toward his work is symbolic of his alienation from life. He prefers not to work or live. In fact, he refuses to become involved in even the most ordinary aspects of living. Bartleby's estrangement from life eventually causes his own imprisonment. In prison when Bartleby's employer visits Bartleby the jailer tells ...
... murder, survival and growing up. These are areas that a pubescent teenager can easily lose themselves in. It forces the reader to realise that in many cases teenagers have no choice in what lifestyles that are born into in this case either becoming the rich kid or the kid from the wrong side of the tracks. The novel has been incorporated into a Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 movie adaptation, starring many popular young actors of our time. The use of both text and movie creates a more vivid understanding and appreciation of the novel for there are no major variations between the two texts. I believe "The Outsiders" is a relevant novel to study as in today's society the concept of viole ...
... I got mad and realized I was pleading with a dumb little Mexican wench and I told her so” (p. 80) This quote makes clear Sal’s intentions with this woman, and also the fact that he is somewhat racist. Then when Sal gets a job working in the fields with Terry, it’s as if he views it all as a camping trip, or even an experiment, to possibly further himself spiritually. “There was a bed, a stove, and a cracked mirror hanging from a pole. It was delightful" (p. 96) Notice the way Sal makes light of their circumstances. He does not appear to even consider Terry’s poor situation, and that she always has to live like this. Sal was just with her for the experience, ...
... But when he planned to kill Banquo and Macduff's family, he didn't hesitated and killed them without regret. Lastly, they were both superstitious. Jack was superstitious, he worshipped the Lord of the Flies and held a ritual dance around the camp fire after sacrificing the pig. For Macbeth, he believed in the fortune telling of the three witches. (Quote: All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis. All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor. All hail Macbeth, that should become king here after.) There are five differences between Jack and Macbeth. Firstly, their ages were different. Jack was a teenager while Macbeth was an adult with a wife. Secondly, they hav ...
... miles off the beach. Despite this closeness to the beach, some people in the town "haven't seen the ocean for twenty years" (482). This town, and this A&P, like the people in it, are boring and stagnant. The characters in this A&P are the most persuasive external factor in Sammy's internal conflict. The reader arrives at the scene to find Sammy ringing up a "cash-register-watcher", whom he describes as being "a witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows" (480). She nearly has a stroke when Sammy accidentally rings up her HiHo crackers twice. This woman is most likely a "sheep" (481), but quite an aggressive one. We don't really see her slimy, nosy side that epito ...
... point he became a man, not a hog. As far as the story tells, he never showed any sort of emotion before the shooting or after up until that point. A hog can't show emotions, but a man can. There is the epiphany of the story, where Mr. Wiggins realizes that the purpose of life is to help make the world a better place, and at that time he no longer minds visiting Jefferson and begins becoming his friend. Mr. Wiggins' relationship with his Aunt declined in this story, although it was never very strong. His Aunt treated him like he should be a hog and always obey, yet she wanted him to make a hog into a man. His Aunt was not a very nice person, she would only show kindness towards people wh ...
... very important later on in the book. Clark is the commander and in charge of starting a new European anti- terrorist group called Rainbow Six. Rainbow Six is split into two teams; Team 1 and Team 2. These teams are the best there is. They are based in Hereford, England, but any European country can call on them at any time. They run 3 miles in 20 minutes every morning at 6:00 am. Only one team will be on-call at a time. The team that is not on-call will be doing live fire practices. In the first 6 months of being in operation they are called on three times which is a lot for this type of thing. The first incident happens in a Swiss bank where terrorists have taken control. They al ...
