The United States was the first nation to have had organized parties. The Democrat party goes back almost to the origins of the American nation.

The slavery problem in the mid 1800's literally destroyed the system of parties in existence. Two new parties reformed at the end 1850, however. These two parties are the real ancestors of the parties that are existing today. The Republican party was the party of the anti-slavery North and the Midwest and the Democrat party was the party of the South and of the ethnical minorities.
