The style of writing used by the author is distinguished among other poets in Old English literature. One literary element that is implemented by the poet is the prominent use of alliterative contrast. For instance when Heorot is first attacked by Grendel, the poet describes a band of nobles “asleep after the feast” and feeling “no sorrow” (28).
