He bets two million dollars of his wealth that the lawyer will not be able to stay in a solitary confinement for 5 years. The lawyer demonstrates his impulsiveness when he replies, “I’ll take the bet, but I would stay not 5 but 15 years”(160). The lawyer does not even reason about what he has just committed to. Furthermore, he raises the stakes of the proposal as a result of his confidence in winning the bet.
