The traditional hero possesses a great deal of strength, as does Beowulf. Beowulf goes through the treacherous act of killing the monster Grendel without any weapons or help from others. Others had tried using swords and other weapons but were not able to succeed. All Beowulf needed was his “fiendish strength” (544) to slay the demon.
