... Auschwitz is known as the holocaust symbol. At least one-third of the 5-6 million Jews killed died in Auschwitz. Another large camp was built called Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz II. This camp had four gas chambers and four crematoria within it. Soon after the construction of this camp, about 40 smaller, satellite camps were established. Altogether they were known as Auschwitz III. Inside the camp resembled jail. Auschwitz was in the general shape of a rectangle. The larger portion of the camp was designated for sleeping area.
