The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution prohibits the unreasonable search and seizure of the individual or his property unless probable cause for the search is demonstrated. One such exception involves automobile searches for contraband goods by a law enforcement officer. The Supreme Court has created this exception because it is not practical to secure a search warrant when there is probable cause to believe that contraband goods are in an automobile.
