Her journey brings her to a hill that she climbs up and down. “At the foot of this hill was a place where a log was laid across the creek.” Phoenix shuts her eyes and crosses the log and opens her eyes when she is across. Along her journey she comes upon a barbed-wire fence. She crawls and creeps through to only come across a field of dead corn. There she comes before a scarecrow that she mistakes for death.
