This is the fourth book in OUP's "Essential Writings" series that I happen to be revieweing. The first three were on Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, and Sri Auorbindo, respectively. It certainly looks as if the series is shaping up well, .... Middle of Term Paper ... outweigh
the liabilities (IV, 20).
If one looks at the last sentence of the previous paragraph, "Rammohan Ray preferred the company of learned shastric brahmans," one's puzzlement with the previously quoted paragraph only increases. What is the logical connection between this paragraph and the previous one? Where is the transition that will link the two? Also, the paragraph itself, obviously, is somewhat compressed; the author has not bothered to spell out his thesis clearly. There is a certain degree of editorial sloppiness too. For example, ""de facto", ""sarkar"," "ancien regime"" are all italicised, but not ""shastric"." ... |
