In March 1919, Mussolini and other young veterans of World War I founded the Fasci di Combattimento, which was a nationalistic, anti-liberal, and anti-socialist that attractedlower middle class support. The Fasci took its namae from an ancient symbol of Roman discipline. Fascism spread into the countryside, and the Black-Shirt militia won support from landownersand attacked peasant leagues and socialist groups. Fascism shed its republicanism and won sympathy from the army and the king, King Victor Emmanuel III.
