In a time when technological advances were non-existent, geography played a major role in the lives of all people. This was evident in the British colonies in America in the 17th century, where the rocky, barren soil and harsh climates effecte .... Middle of Term Paper ... summers. The soil in New England was also rocky and somewhat infertile, causing a shortened growing season. Farming was tough and food was scarce. This caused many New Englanders to turn to ship building, become merchants or fishing to make a living.
