... the spring of 1859 somewhere around 100,000 people left for the hills of the Rockies in the hunt for gold. As many as half of those people didn't even make it to Colorado. A lot of the other people either turned back or died on the way. Most of the people who did make it returned home without the riches that they came for. The people that returned home were called "Go Backs". The other men stayed behind and continued panning or opened up shops in nearby towns.
