One point to consider is that of Ralph and Piggy's lack of courage and the role it played not only in letting Jack run free but also the rest of the hunters. One could argue that because neither of the boys would stand up to Jack, he was left to do whatever he wished. This was a large factor in the societies downfall because Jack was the head of the eventual rebellion and turn to savagery.
