What compels a man to think of today’s society with open eyes, and actually allow him to visualize change? Voltaire achieved this as he wrote Candide. In this novel Voltaire mocks the problems of his everyday surroundings by pointing them out .... Middle of Term Paper ... incident, shown in chapter two: “With proper legal procedure he was asked which he would prefer, to be beaten thirty-six times by the whole regiment, or to receive twelve bullets in his brain.” That is just one of the many predicaments in which our main character becomes involved in. Another such incident occurs in chapter fifteen when Candide is faced with his true love’s brother.
